Description: The premiere book release from the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations was co-published with the National Center for Developmental Education and edited by Jeanne L. Higbee. This book honors Martha Maxwell’s vision, bringing together the works of various CLADEA Fellows to explore developmental education and learning assistance through historical context, current issues, and best practices.

Journal

Research in Learning Assistance and Developmental Education is a peer reviewed publication of the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations (CLADEA). It is published three times a year and provided free of charge to the members of all CLADEA organizations.

Description: This white paper is a call to action for U.S. colleges, universities, and higher education policymakers to provide meaningful access and academic support for all students. Meaningful access and academic support are imperative to increase graduation rates, develop an educated workforce, strengthen the economy, and compete globally. Casazza and Silverman lay out five imperatives to forge a path toward increased college completion, explore policies that restrict or inhibit access and academic support, describe features of successful academic support programs, and respond to recent developmental education research.

Description: JCRL invites authors to submit their scholarly research for publication. JCRL is an international forum for the publication of high-quality articles on theory, research, and policy related to areas of developmental education, postsecondary literacy instruction, and learning assistance at the postsecondary level. JCRL is published biannually in the spring and fall for CRLA and is available on the Taylor & Francis platform.

Description: Available free on LSCHE! This monograph contains 20 conversations covering different aspects of starting a learning assistance center. Authorities in the field of education address a variety of topics including technology, assessment, and organizational structure.

Deese-Roberts, S. (Ed.). (2003). College Reading and Learning Association: Tutor training handbook (Rev. ed.). College Reading and Learning Association.
Description: Available free on LSCHE! CRLA’s Tutor Training Handbook is a revision of a former edition published in 1996. Incorporating new topics alongside the foundational articles, the Tutor Training Handbook provides a wide range of information both for developers of new tutor training programs and for experienced tutor trainers. The handbook provides articles that elaborate on the conceptual basis and specific strategies for tutor training as well as relevant issues in the field of tutor training.

Journals

The Journal of Developmental Education will now be published by the Department of Leadership and Educational Studies at Appalachian State University with Dr. Chauntee Thrill as Editor. Back issues to 2016 are available on JSTOR.

Boylan, H. R., & Saxon, D. P. (2012). Attaining excellence in developmental education: Research-based recommendations for administrators. DevEd Press.
Description: Applying lessons learned from years of studying research and best practices in developmental education at high-performing institutions, Attaining Excellence is designed to provide recommendations to administrators that will contribute to excellence in the developmental education classroom. It is organized into two sections. One section recommends actions that cost little or nothing to implement. The other section recommends actions that involve the expenditure of resources and provides justification for doing so. Appendices include non-cognitive assessment instruments, recommended readings for developmental educators, and a checklist for administrators to use in determining the extent to which they have made decisions and assigned the resources necessary for excellence in developmental education.

Boylan, H. R. (2002). What works: Research-based best practices in developmental education. Continuous Quality Improvement Network and the National Center for Developmental Education.
Description: What Works is a joint project of the Continuous Quality Improvement Network and the National Center for Developmental Education. It features results from the “Best Practices in Developmental Education” benchmarking study by the Continuous Quality Improvement Network and the American Productivity and Quality Center. These results are combined with findings from a decade of research by the National Center for Developmental Education to create a guide to the best models and techniques available for the professional developmental educator. What Works identifies practically everything we know from research on how to design, implement, and evaluate developmental education and learning assistance programs.

The Learning Assistance Review (TLAR)
(Available on NCLCA website. Membership not required except for two most recent issues.)
Description: As an official publication of NCLCA, The Learning Assistance Review seeks to foster communication among learning center professionals. Its audience includes anyone who is interested in improving the learning skills of postsecondary students. The Learning Assistance Review aims to publish scholarly articles and reviews that address issues of interest to a broad range of academic professionals. Primary consideration will be given to articles about program design and evaluation, classroom-based research, the application of theory and research to practice, innovative teaching strategies, student assessment, and other topics that bridge gaps within our diverse profession. The journal is published twice a year, in the spring and fall. All submissions are subject to a masked review process.

NCLCA Newsletter
Description: The NCLCA Newsletter, published three or four times a year, features a wide array of articles:
A Campus Visit: A description of a learning center, including successful programs, organizational structure, marketing techniques, training strategies, hiring practices, collaborative efforts, and any aspect of the learning center’s operation that would be of interest.
Practitioner’s Corner: Specific techniques and strategies for building different aspects of successful learning center programs.
From the President’s Desk: The current president of NCLCA takes this opportunity to address the membership.

Resource Directory
Description: The Resource Directory provides a wealth of information about and contacts to our members, including statistical information and profiles of individuals and learning centers drawn from a survey that is distributed to the membership and others in the learning assistance field. In the spring of 1989, Martha Casazza, President of MCLCA, sent a survey to the membership asking them to share information about their jobs, centers, institutions, and services. Casazza compiled the data and mailed a booklet out to all MCLCA members. The Resource Directory has been updated several times since that initial publication.

NCLCA Conference Proceedings
Description: The NCLCA conference is held in late September or early October each year. Conference presentations, handouts, and other materials are available for some sessions, beginning with the 2009 conference.

NCLCA Member File Exchange
Description: To enable members to share resources such as evaluation forms, training materials, budget plans, and programming documents, NCLCA maintains a member file exchange. Topics include advertisements, budget, community outreach, contracts/agreements, job descriptions, evaluation, recommendation letters/tutor résumés, sample conference proposals, study skills/tutoring courses, supplemental instruction, training, and tutor plans/reflections.

NCLCA Learning Center Bibliography
Description: The NCLCA Learning Center Bibliography is a valuable research tool for learning center administrators. This searchable resource includes annotated bibliographies of scholarly articles, books, multimedia, and other sources, and covers topics such as best practices in tutoring, hiring and training, budget and finance, special populations, programming, assessment, campus partnerships, and much more! The bibliography was edited by April Conkey and Kimberly McManus, and committees were led by David Reedy, Alan Craig, and Jennifer Haley.

Practioner to Practitioner: The NOSS Practitioner to Practioner publishes articles of interest for developmental education professionals including administrators, faculty, learning assistance personnel, academic counselors, and tutors who are interested in the discussion of practical issues in post-secondary develop- mental education . Practitioner to Practioner is published electronically twice each academic year . Articles in Practitioner to Practioner are indexed in ERIC.

Newsletter

NOSS Newsletter
Description: All editions of the NOSS Newsletter are published electronically. Articles are usually focused on NADE news: articles from officers; reports from committees, councils, and SPINs; blurbs from chapters; articles from sister organizations with which NOSS has reciprocal agreements; short informative articles of interest to our members (such as how-to articles and book reviews). Research-oriented articles are best steered elsewhere; however, articles from the NOSS Digest are featured in the newsletter.

Description: NOSS Board Annual Reports, agenda, and executive board minutes for approval have been listed and posted onto the board documents webpage, ranging from 2010 to 2014 and updated regularly. Annual Reports come from members of the current executive board, president, president-elect, vice president, treasurer, secretary, immediate past president/emeritus chair, conference manager, council for the advancement of standards in higher education (CAS) director, certification council, committee coordinator, SPIN chair, council of learning assistance and developmental education associations (CLADEA) liaison, and database manager.

Description: The NADE Monograph was published annually from 1996 to 2003. Though no longer published, the NADE Monograph provides high-quality and valuable insights and information for those in developmental education and learning assistance. Each monograph addresses a different theme and compiles work from well-known professionals in the field.


Publications of Other Organizations

Journal of College Academic Support Programs (J-CASP) publishes articles relevant to developmental education and learning support in Texas. The J-CASP is sponsored and made possible by the Texas Chapter of the College Reading and Learning Association, the Texas Association for Developmental Education, and the Graduate Program in Developmental Education at Texas State University.

The New York Learning Skills Association's journal Research & Teaching in Developmental Education frequently publishes articles for learning center and learning assistance professionals.

The Journal of Access, Retention, and Inclusion in Higher Education supports research in the areas of developmental education, access, retention, inclusion, and student success in higher education.

The Journal of Computing in Higher Education focuses on the role of instructional technology in increasing access, success, and affordability in postsecondary education.

The Journal of Peer Learning publishes research articles about peer learning across a variety of contexts, predominantly higher education. The journal is published by the University of Wollongong in Australia.

Journal of Postsecondary Student Success JPSS will focus on student success in postsecondary education, with a particular interest in innovations and solutions to promote success for all students and to close the gaps in success in students of different backgrounds.

Mentoring & Tutoring: Partnership in Learning is a journal of the International Council of Professors of Educational Leadership and the International Mentoring Association. Mentoring & Tutoring focuses on advancing "knowledge and understanding of mentoring, tutoring and/or partnership in learning through a focus on high-quality research papers and development activities."

The NACADA Journal often has articles of interest to learning support professionals. Especially see this list of articles on academic support.

The Writing Center Journal is the official journal of the International Writing Center Association.
