Welcome to The Winter Institute! This week-long working retreat is designed as an intensive collegial experience for professionals in the field of learning assistance. The Winter Institute is a continuation of the annual institute originated by Martha Maxwell at UC Berkeley and continued by Frank Christ at Cal State Long Beach. WI ’99 will mark the 20th Institute in the series.The emphasis in this year’s theme is the role of the learning assistance professional as it relates to Challenges of Technology and Change for Learning Assistance Centers in an Information Age.
Presentations will focus on:
The Mentors
"Excellent format. Mentors provided me with some excellent info that I can apply to my programs and my department’s programs.”
WI Mentors are integral to the success of the Institute. These individuals, each a recognized leader in the field of learning assistance, not only provide individual and group mentoring and consultation, but also participate as active learners throughout the Institute. Mentors begin each day’s program with a breakfast meeting with their mentee group, continue with daily informal meetings, and conclude each day’s activities with a feedback session.

WebBoard gives all Winter Institute registrants, presenters, mentors, WI alumni, and invited colleagues an opportunity to dialog with each other on the Web. WebBoard is both a chat room and an online conferencing system. WebBoard is a closed system open only to those who are registered for Next WI. Registration for the 1999 Winter Institute opens on July 15, 1998. Remember that registration is limited to 60 people, so reserve your place now.
As you register, you will be automatically added to the WebBoard and can soon begin to participate in the conferences that are set up for the Institute.
Initially, there are three conferences for participant discussion:
1. Technology Conference where you can ask questions and comment on technology as it impacts on your professional life and on your learning assistance program;
2. WI ’99 Program Notes Conference, where in addition to program updates, you can ask questions or comment on any aspect of the program that you will be experiencing in January;
3. Tucson Area Conference, where in addition to URL’s for Tucson and vicinity, you can ask questions about the city, its attractions, cultural and sporting events, dining, and shopping.
Remember that WebBoard conferences, unlike listservs, focus on topics with all messages threaded by date. Messages can be searched by date, sender, and keywords. In addition, conferences have their own chat rooms where you can keyboard chat in real time (synchronously) with colleagues who are online.
