Coming of Age – Learning Support Centers in Higher Education: Serving Students, Faculty, Staff, Administration, and Surrounding Communities
January 3-7, 2000, Tucson, Arizona
Welcome to The Winter Institute. This week-long retreat is designed as an intensive collegial experience for professionals in the field of learning assistance. The Winter Institute is a continuation of the annual institute originated by Martha Maxwell at UC Berkeley and continued by Frank Christ at Cal State Long Beach. WI 2000 will mark the 21st Institute in the series.
The emphasis in this year’s theme is the role of learning assistance professionals as it relates to Coming of Age – Learning Support Centers in Higher education: Serving Students, Faculty, Staff, Administration, and Surrounding Communities.
Registration for WI 2000 opens July 15, 1999. Please note that we have added the power of WebBoard to the Winter Institutes. As you register for WI 2000, you will automatically be subscribed to the special WI 2000 WebBoard that has been set up for all WI participants so that you can carry on a collegial dialog with other participants including WI presenters, mentors, and administrators.
WI 2000 presentations will focus on:
Opportunities for learning support center administrators.
Programs and services for learning support centers.
Program data collection, analysis and recording.
Learning support centers and outreach to community programs.
The Institute culminates with participants identifying their “Next Steps” to meet information challenges to their Learning Support Center and/or their Developmental Education program.
WI Mentors are integral to the success of the institute. These individuals, each a recognized leader in their field of learning support, not only provide individual and group mentoring and consultation , but also participate as active leaders throughout the institute. Mentors begin each day’s program with a breakfast meeting with their group, continue with daily informal meetings, and conclude each day’s activities with a feedback session.
